This per ice cores drilled in Greenland, down 3 km, which go back over 120,000 years. And the sensitivity of their instrumentation is down to the thousandths of a degree, which allows them to re-construct the temperatures. From his presentation, below, -4 is 4,000 years previous today. Notice that it was 2.5 degrees warmer than today; - 2 would be the Roman age; in the 1800s, specifically, around 1875, it was the lowest temperatures Earth has had in the past 8,000 to 10,000 years. It was also around this time that man started consistent meteorological observations. I.e., we started measuring at the coldest it had been in 8 to 10 thousand years.

Jørgensen Pender Steffensen, Curator at the Neils Bohr Institute Department of Geophysics in Denmark posted a video describing their findings from ice core samples giving temperature data going back many thousands of years. Jørgen Peder Steffensen, of the Niels Bohr Inst., Dept. of Geophysics, says at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmmmgiPha_Y that during the MWP, the temperatures “were about 1.5 degrees warmer, on average” than today. This per ice cores drilled in Greenland, down 3 km, which go back over 120,000 years. And the sensitivity of their instrumentation is down to the thousandths of a degree, which allows them to re-construct the temperatures. From his presentation, below, -4 is 4,000 years previous today. Notice that it was 2.5 degrees warmer than today; - 2 would be the Roman age; in the 1800s, specifically, around 1875, it was the lowest temperatures Earth has had in the past 8,000 to 10,000 years. It was also around this time that man started consistent meteorological observations. I.e., we started measuring at the coldest it had been in 8 to 10 thousand years.
